Learn to freedive. Discover more of Jervis Bay.
Build your confidence, explore on one breath and experience the underwater world with the South Coast’s first freediving school.
Learn in a place that inspires you to keep exploring, with experienced instructors who actively care for its future. Our two-day Performance Freediving International (PFI) Freediver course introduces you to the techniques, knowledge and safety skills that make freediving more comfortable and rewarding.
One breath opens up a whole new world
Freediving gives you the freedom to explore beneath the surface using a single breath.
This entry-level certification course teaches you the fundamentals of breath-hold diving while developing essential safety and buddy skills. Whether you want to improve your snorkelling or take your first steps into freediving, we’ll help you develop a strong foundation.
Learn somewhere extraordinary
Jervis Bay is our home, our classroom and a place we never stop exploring.
Its kelp forests, rocky reefs and diverse marine life make learning here an experience in itself. Our boat-based training gives you the opportunity to put your new skills into practice while exploring the Jervis Bay Marine Park, the best diving south of the great barrier reef.
Depending on conditions and the season, we may explore sea caves, visit the seal colony or look for some of the bay’s remarkable sharks and rays. Sites and wildlife encounters vary, with safety, suitable training conditions and respect for the animals guiding every decision.
Learn from over a decade of teaching experience
Woebegone was the first freediving school on the South Coast. Owner and head instructor Dylan has been teaching freediving for over a decade, helping people become more confident, capable and comfortable in the ocean.
We bring that experience into every course, with clear explanations, practical coaching and time to develop your skills. You’ll learn how to work towards depth and breath-hold goals while recognising your limits and looking after your buddy.
Protecting the bay is part of what we do
We believe exploring the ocean comes with a responsibility to care for it.
Through monthly beach cleanups, marine education and our involvement with ORRCA, we actively support the protection of our coastline and wildlife.
We’re also a vegan dive shop. Our commitment to animal welfare shapes our business, including our decision not to sell spearfishing equipment or teach spearfishing courses, or serve animal products on our boats.
Throughout your course, we’ll help you become a thoughtful ocean visitor: moving carefully around reefs, giving animals space and allowing wildlife encounters to happen on their terms.
Why we teach through PFI
We’ve chosen Performance Freediving International for its emphasis on freediving safety, practical water skills and a flexible approach to delivering training.
Our aim is for you to leave with an understanding of what you’re doing, why it matters and how to practise safely with a trained buddy.
Two days · Ages 10+ · PFI certification · Theory, pool, beach and boat sessions
Day one — understand, practise and build confidence
We begin with theory, pool training and beach-based skills. You’ll learn about breathing and relaxation, equalisation, freediving physiology and physics, equipment, safety and buddy procedures.
Day two — take your skills into the bay
Head out on the boat for open-water depth training and exploration of Jervis Bay Marine Park. With your instructor’s guidance, you’ll bring your skills together and work towards your course requirements.
